The Crossing Arts Alliance is certainly defined by the strength and contributions of its members and often the one person who seems to have that extra bit of effort to make things happen is our Artistic Director, Millie Engisch-Morris. Her experience and skills in art and design help shape the look and feel of The Crossing as evidenced in our newsletter, brochures and the promotional material we create for the art and the cultural events we sponsor. Who better to give you, our supporters, a look into the inner sanctum of The Crossing Arts Alliance than our friend and colleague Millie. Join us in exploring art on a personal basis through Millie's Blog. Enjoy!
Lately I've been experiencing a heightened awareness of the fact that art works wonders at uniting people. Creative energy brought about through various art-forms is a reason to come together and the excitement breeds more creative energy.
This summer we were touched by Joey Halvorson's post-earthquake Haiti photo exhibition. It was good to see folks from the medical team that she traveled with in Haiti at the artists reception and hear them tell how Joey's creative way of seeing brought energy to the group. Her exhibit helped connect us to the people of Haiti in our hearts and minds, and a broader appreciation of the generosity of many local people in medical professions.
Diane Whiting's "Sea, Sky & Stone" exhibition connects us to the earth elements that inspired her amazing paintings. Listening to her husband Jim tell of the joy that painting brings to Diane helps explain her high level of productivity – she's having fun! Several artists mentioned that the high energy at Diane's opening reception inspired them to pick up their brushes and try something new.
Spent a fun day trip in August with the Arty Van ladies, particularly enjoying the Wing Young Huie: Retrospective at the Duluth Art Institute and the opera "Elixer of Love" at the Glensheen Mansion.
The blossoming of the Lakes Area Chamber Music concerts was certainly something to behold. After enjoying the series at various area churches, the grand finale at Tornstrom Auditorium left me completely awestruck by the incredible gathering of talent and audience, and no doubt many folks had the same experience.
The rallying of artists and art appreciators is so uplifting that I wish I could bottle the resulting creative energy and enjoy several healthy doses everyday.
Ciao,
Millie
